Service - Turbine Testing

Olympus Avon Test Cell Bed Rolls RoyceOrbital Energy has access to a Gas Turbine Test Cell facility in Red Deer, Alberta (Canada) that was designed by it's employees. Currently capable of testing Rolls Royce Avon and Olympus engines, the test bed is used to showcase state of the art equipment for monitoring vibration, efficiency, fuel flow, oil pressure and temperature. Advanced sound dampening technology is employed to deaden the engine noise as we sometimes use the facility to run endurance tests on customer engines.

Engine parameters are projected on multiple screens, along with vibration plots and control schematics. Video of the test is overlayed with the current parameters, and a copy of this is given to the customer on CD/DVD at the end of each test.

If a customer cannot be present for a test, then the same video and data can be streamed through either the internet or a phone connection to the customers location.

Each test is overseen by a turbine specialist and he is supported by technical and safety personnel. Engines are typically taken through ramped stages and compared to the original manufacturers test performance specifications. As each scheduled test point is reached, the results are automatically recorded for the customer report. Visual and audio inspection are conducted at idle speeds before and after ramping up to higher speeds. FFT analysis can be carried out on the vibration readings. These peaks are automatically plotted against the various rotor speeds within the engine to highlight any balancing problems.
